Splashes & Sands of Sugar Beach
The other day I walked all of Sugar Beach on Maui’s southern shores with fellow photog, Matthew Nall. We started walking from Haycraft Park in Ma’alaea and walked all the way to North Kihei. It was quite an amazing journey and needless to say my ankles were quite sore from all that walking in the sand! I had a good time goofing off, splashing around in the water and peering into the little tide pools. It was also great fun bouncing creative ideas off with another photographer. Must do more often!
Beautiful photos – thanks for sharing! Congrats on freshly pressed!
Beautiful! I especially like the 3rd collage.
Beautiful!
That’s such a cool shot of the watering splashing up. Great pics.
Very cool. Looks like a fun day’s work.
beautiful photos, madelynne!
the splash shots are so awesome. What camera and lens did you use? Truly unique photos!
Thanks! I used my Canon 5D with my Canon EF 28-200mm lens.

Big fan here.
your pictures are GORGEOUS!
From one beach comber to another your love of the beach comes through loud and clear.
Beautiful photos!!!
Have you braved the road to Hana yet? The greenery is spectacular there. Just make sure you bring drinks and food along the way, as the general store isn’t always open when you’re ready to eat. Especially on Sundays. =) Born and raised in Hawai’i, thank you for your beautiful pictures of home!
Mahalo! And yes, I’ve braved the road to Hana twice now. Though I haven’t posted any photos yet…Hoping to go camping back that way soon and really explore!
I have just discovered your blog. Bravo, j’aime beaucoup vos photos.
Beautiful photos!

Gorgeous pictures! I have stayed in Kihei twice now and I love it and Maui!!! I had a film camera both times I was in Maui and got some amazing pictures, but I have been dying to go back now that I have a digital camera. I am so jealous you were in Maui, I need to go back. Did you get a chance to go to Hana?
Stunning photos…really nice. Makes me NEED to go to Maui!
Smashing pictures!
Nice. Great use of motion, especially in the last shot.
Love the movement in the photos.
So very pretty, whimsical, simplistic…

Brilliant! Thanks for posting.
Those pictures are bitchin, you must have a great camera to capture the splashes like that!
Amazing pictures!
love your pictures! How did you manage to get the water splashing up like that, it’s gorgeous! I am in love with looking at peoples photography so recently I decided I need to start doing my own, first on the list is buying a good camera! lol =)
Thanks! To get the water splash I just kicked the water, held my camera low and toward the light with a super fast shutter speed to “freeze” the motion of the water! And don’t spend too much on the camera body, better to invest in good lenses! 🙂
Amazing photographs! I’m dreaming of being at the beach now, hehe.
great photographs…!!!
NIce pictures! Thanks for sharing…
The first one is my favoutie
Beautiful pictures! I can’t wait for the holidays so I can go to the beach again!
Mahalo nui loa for all the wonderful words! I’m so stoked to be “freshly pressed” and even more excited to have such amazing responses to my work!
To capture these images I used my Canon 5D with a 28-200mm lens. My shutter speed was 1/2000 for both of the “feet splashing” photographs and 1/4000 for the photo with just the water splash. The “water splash” image was fun to do but I had to take a bit of a risk getting my camera wet! I’d kick the water up with my foot, while holding my camera low and into the sunset.
Thanks again for the comments! Keep shooting all you other photogs!!!
Gorgeous photos. What ISO were you shooting at? I love the depth and texture in these pics, and the richness of the light. Will be checking back regularly — congrats on being freshly pressed!

My ISO was changing throughout the day, I strive to shoot below ISO 400 unless I’m forced to shoot higher. I believe the “water splash” image was at ISO 800 to allow me the use of the fast shutter speed. Mahalo nui loa!
Amazing work!
Cool and stunning pics. 🙂
Beautiful 🙂
Fun Post. Great creativity and use of lines.

Your photos are beautiful, Madelynne! Congrats on FP – well deserved!
I love the last photo! The lemon yellow dress contrasts so beautifully with the brownish sand, and I can just ‘feel’ the sand between my toes!
Gorgeous pictures!
Just saw this blog and amazed!
‘Sand impressions’ was truly gorgeous collage.
The 3rd collage was astonishing beauty-all along with the vanishing ripples and spontaneous splashes! I even rechecked my screen for any water splashes on it!
Wonderful images. Water is permanently alive. http://kommoss.wordpress.com/2010/07/01/the-passport-trip-part-3/water-spray-2-k/

I love the texture in the sand. The splashing in the third collage is engaging and beautiful too! So lovely.
These are beautiful, crisp, colorful pictures!
Good shots, I especially love your top right photo in ‘feet splashing’, tried many a time to capture water shots like that with less impressive results than yours! 😛
I love the first picture and the splash photos where you catch the water jumping up from your feet look so cool too!
I really appreciate the awesomeness of your photos, not only because I’m a beach bum, but because I love photography!

beautiful splashes and sand ripples — great photos!
Some great photos, makes me want to go out and try take some of my own.
Woah…great pictures!!! How do you sign your pictures btw? I already put some pictures online but I’d rather “sign” them first so that nobody can take them away easily.
Thanks! My signature is actually the “Jellyka-Estrya’s Handwriting” font. I just downloaded it and added a font layer in Photoshop before posting online.
Beautiful photos – thanks for sharing! Congrats on freshly pressed!
Great job . And if you want some Romanian Landscape check my Tourofromania blog.

WONDERFUL. Beautiful pictures. I love the splash. So pure.
Just beautiful. I LOVE beaches. Any beach will energise me and give me peace. Even just a photo of a beach/sea/coastal view will do the trick for me. Please keep doing what you are doing – you clearly love it. Greetings. http://www.ourspiritualwealth.com
Awesome!!!!
Beautiful photographs!
inspiring…lovely work
Isn’t it great reverting back to our childhoods, having fun playing barefoot in the sand? And lucky you, you captured the beauty so innocently on your trusted camera. What a skilled photographer you are! Thanks for sharing!
Cool
with these photos things look like coming into life! congratulations madelynne, your photos are amazing!
I love looking at pictures of landscapes and water. And I love that no matter how good these are, they’re still only the third best depictions of the scenes, after your experiences of them and your memories of them.
These are beautiful!! What camera did you use? And at what settings, if you don’t mind my asking? I try to slow down the shutter speed, but it’s never quite as crisp! Congrats on fp!
Mahalo! I use the Canon 5D with my 28-200mm lens. My settings were changing throughout the day but to capture the water crisp I use a fast shutter speed (preferably 1/4000 or faster).
Nice photos ! i like third one
Absolutely amazing. Thank you for sharing!

Wow these photos are absolutely perfect. They express such melancholy – they make me strangely sad. They look quite lonely. I loveeeeeee them!

Great photographs. Hawaii is a place of magic and mystery. It captivates an individual or an audience of people in seconds after saying the word, “Hawaii”. Its beauty is so majestic, I miss it so much. I just moved from the islands to Texas. I lived here before for 11 years before returning to the islands for five years. It is so expensive there. I now reside in Texas but my heart was left in Hawaii. Thank you for the wonderful photos.
pretty amazing photography.
Very Nice Pics! Thanks for the post!

I love the whole theme and the way pictures are merged! They are very beautiful and its amazing photography! 🙂 Hats off to you! 😀
One word- Wow
I don’t think that beach is made of sugar. With all that water, a sugar beach should crystallize really fast. Man that would be delicious, though.
Fabulous photography! Love your site!
